SPOONFED: THE SHOW!

Spoonfed is an arts and entertainment event, scheduled for a one night showing. The show will attempt to meld various art forms to stimulate both the visual and listening senses. It’ll primarily showcase up and coming urban artist, who work in mediums that range from canvas to photography. Entertainment will include music provided by DJ Ultraviolet and Mr. Sonny James, in addition a reading from spoken word artist Black Ice. We were also fortunate enough to have sponsors such as two.one.five Magazine, Frank151, and the Bell Ringers. The artist line-up for the evening consists of Flygirrl, Amanda Diva, Marcus Snapkracker, Urugliness, Stress the Whiteboy, Don Scott, Taqiy Muhammed, Jonene Taddei, Milosz, Jassyone, Lamont Wilson and last but not least Eric Jordan. Show date is August 21, 2009, so if you're in Philly come through to Gallerie Isada. If you miss this one, don't worry there will be more!

It's time for Freekugly to start kickin' up a little dust. How do you establish yourself on the yard...you walk up to the biggest baddest mofo and whoop his mutha%@$#in' ass. At least that's what I was told. Unofficially Undisputed is new to the yard, so we gotta do what we gotta do. It's the side of Freekugly that likes to stir up a little comotion. I've compiled a list of established brands that are targeted for label attack. What have they done to me...absolutely nothing! On the real, this is all about fun, we are not a negative and slanderous brand, but we love fun and being mischevious. The brands that are targeted are brands that have made its way and have gotten my respect for the visions they have. Yet and still, there's no immunity.

FREEK OF THE WEEK: UGLY IS THE NEW COOL

What's good people. I'm back again with the Freek of the Week. I know it's kinda overdue, but it's here none the less. This weeks freek(s) are The Cool Kids, which I consider the freshest new group out. I first came across this group at the Dunkxchange in New York. While I was out there vending, they were one of the performers for that night. Good thing was, we were fortunate enough to grab a space near the stage, and could hear them loud and clear. I listened to their lyrics and was pleasently suprised when I heard references of nintendo, freestyle bikes with mag wheels, beepers, gold, and all the stuff that was hot as I was growing up. It was a new style, but not. What I mean is, it was familiar to me because I've been into hip hop since the early 80's, but hearing them in contrast to the garbage that is on the radio was a nastalgic feel. I grabbed the cd off of itunes and found it to be dope, I believe you would too.
In the beginning of the year Karmaloop had a contest to design a Cool Kids t-shirt, I entered, but the contest seemed kinda fugasi, that's another story. Unfortunately I didn't win, hell, I don't even know who won for that matter. I posted my entry on the blog thinking that I missed the deadline. It was a dope tee, and I got a lot of great reviews on it. Anyways, I believe The Cool Kids are a decent duo to get down with. If you want to sample some of their music, you can look them up on playlist.com, or imeem, but I say buy the cd, it's a fairly decent price on itunes, to be honest, I woulda paid more. Yes yes ya'll. We have done it. Finally, Freekugly has selected its mascot. After reviewing as many animals that we could think of and look up, we came across one of the ugliest, or shall I say weirdest animals out there. Yup, you got it, a platypus. I don't know how familiar you are with this species, but I always thought it was interesting and completely trippy. It's like four animals in one...yeesh! We now introduce you to Percy the Pessimistic Platypus. You will most definitely be seeing more of him in one form or another. Before I leave you, here are a couple of facts about the everloving platypus. Learn something! The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. It is the sole living representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record.
The bizarre appearance of this egg-laying, venomous, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate fraud. It is one of the few venomous mammals; the male Platypus has a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans. The unique features of the Platypus make it an important subject in the study of evolutionary biology and a recognisable and iconic symbol of Australia

STOP BUGGIN'!!!

"Stop buggin'!" Many people have heard that expression over the years. Depending on where you're from, you may have heard it a lot. Urban Legend has it, the word "buggin" was first used as slang terminology in the boroughs of New York, but who really knows. Hell, who really cares?! More importantly is what it means. When someone tells you you're buggin', it means that some how you have lost your ever-loving mind. Very similar to "trippin". This tee was designed to pay homage to one of my favorite terms. Stop Buggin', Yo You Buggin', Quit Buggin'!!
Now we come to Tu Phace, a truly hilarious, and very talented individual. Tu Phace is a music artist from Philly. Who will not hesitate to bring his arsenal of Floetic Hip Hop to rock a show. "You don't know Tu Phace, but you should". In addition, he is a fan of Freekugly. The "Stop Buggin" tee has become somewhat synonymous with this dude. It's because of this video, that I crack the hell up whenever I look at the tee. As a designer, and a provider of goods it is important that I like what I create. Even still, I have my favorites and this tee in all of its simplicity is one of them. Enjoy!

THE RE-POST: 808'S, HEARTBREAK, & UGLINESS

Back by popular demand is the Freek of the Week, Mr. West. I've gotten tons of compliments on this Freekugly rendition of your favorite artist. Right now we are in the midst of Yeezy's sneaker frenzy. You gotta admit how fly the situation really is. This guy has two sneakers that hit the market, from two top company's, Louis Vuitton and Nike. Plus a clothing line to boot. You may have your opinion on how you feel about his footwear, and maybe even his overall style, but the fact remains...he's doing his thing. I give him a lot of respect for what he does as an artist, and I respect his influence in fashion. This maybe the most iconic Freek of the Week to date. We appreciate all of your responses to this character. Look for more characters from Freekugly, we've got'em!

MORE ARTWORK FROM URUGLINESS: UNDONE THE SERIES

Urugliness is back again. This time with a series b*$@#es! This is the first series from Urugliness, entitled "Undone" featuring one of my favorite characters...Ned. This series of paintings focuses on emotions we go through in our everyday lives, mainly in our relationships. These emotions are something that anyone, young or old can relate to. The first picture in the series is the introduction of Ned, he is undone and he is alone. The second is Ned in stitches, trying to heal, and the third is Ned undone and unstuffed. He is unzipped and losing his stuffing. There's more to come from this series, which will go through more transitions. Anyways, keep checking back for more additions.

SUMMER '09: F_U STAPLE TEE

Introducing our FU staple tee. As part of the Freekugly summer collection, we've added this tee which consist of our FU icon filled with the images of Freekugly t-shirt designs from the past and some that are still to come. The first color to be introduced is our basic steel gray with black print. We will introduce three more colors between May and June to complete our selection for the season. Stay tuned!!

THE FREEKIN' YEEZYS ARE HERE

The arrival of the Air Yeezy has been anticipated for several months now by sneaker heads world wide. It's release date for the first colorway was the 4th of April with two more colorways to follow on a monthly release between now and June. Personally, I like'em, preferrably the black...but then again, who the hell am I right! This go around, Freekugly is on the job. When we first started, our mission was to offer our followers and potential followers a tee that could match back to any pair of kicks on the market. We tended to stray from that during our following seasons after our release but now we're back! This season, we're not primarily following all of the sneaker colorways, just the anticipated styles that come out. This Freekin' Yeezy pack follows the colorways of the sneaker even on down to the glow.
The pack consist of three tees, charcoal, black, and silver. I freeked out your beloved Yeezy and trimmed 'em with the sneakers color detail. The spots, logo, and lettering are done in glow-in-the-dark ink to compliment the glowing details. The first tee to match the recent drop is availible now. Each tee will drop the day before its counterpart. Stay tuned!!!

Everyone loves a super hero, and we've all got our favorites. Part 2 of the Freek of the Week series is dedicated to the super heroes. Like many of you, I grew up reading comic books, Marvel of course was my favorite. Comics were a big thing for me growing up. They taught me how to draw and exercised my imagionation, got me in trouble at school(subsequently at home), and they also help me make a couple of bucks for after school snizzacks.
Here we have a heroes from the Marvel and DC universe. Ironman, The Incredible Hulk, and Superman are a few of my favoriites from both. Freekugly has taken a run at these characters as the beginning of my Super Ugly series, next up...the freekin villains!

FREEK OF THE WEEK: JACKSON HEIGHTS OWN...RANDY WATSON

I mean...how funny is this dude, or how funny was he...or how funny is he....who knows. Since he had those issues several years ago, he's been mostly kid-friendly. But this is the Eddie I remember from the days of Raw, and Trading Places to name just a couple of movies where he was at his prime. Randy Watson was one of the funniest characters in this movie. "I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way," who else can make those words funny. Yes people, you gotta give it up to his band, Sexual Chocolate, the most lackluster group I've ever seen.

I'M FREEKIN' ADDICTED!!!

Yeah, I'm freekin' addicted! I participated in my first art show this past Sunday at Fusion night club, it was kinda cool. Not only was it my first art show, it was also my first time doing canvas with paint and brush. Outside of computer graphics, airbrush has been my chosen medium. I wanted to try something new. I considered Freekugly the perfect subject because the characters come off well on computer and clothing, the question was how well will it translate on canvas. Once I finished the canvases I was pleasantly surprised with what I've done. I have completed my first three paintings, and they look pretty cool. I also chose a pretentious art name to go by. I am definitely glad I did the show, and I look to do more. You will be seeing more paintings from urugliness!Upload Image

FREEK OF THE WEEK: WHO'S THE BADDEST

Who's the meanest, who's the baddest mofo lowdown 'round this damn town...SHONUFF. This is straight from my era. Some of the young folk don't even understand how much of a classic this movie was. Though I must admit, the acting was horrible. So you've got your homeboy Bruce Leroy, against Shonuff, the self proclaimed Shogun of Harlem. This was your classic duel between good and evil...and of course, evil never prevails. Win, lose or draw, as with Heath Ledger's rendition of the Joker, Shonuff was one that you love to see in action. A straight smack talker, in control of a crew, of...what would you even call them?! You've got the girls, I mean do the even know how to fight, or were they the groupies. What is that?!! I took karate for two years, and I ain't seen not near chick in my dojo. Then they got the other guys that just scream and jump around and polish Sho's bizzalls. With all that being said, why wouldn't I watch it everytime it comes on, I love The Last Dragon. But of all the characters, Shonuff was my favorite smack talkin' master of the red glow.

SIMPLY A CLASSIC!

Mr. Sonny James a.k.a. DJ Statik doesn't miss a beat. Party after party, mixtape after mixtape, he just won't stop. I remember a short while ago, he invited me to a Little Brother show here in Philly. He says, "yeah, I'm opening up for them, come check it out." Never have I been skeptical because i've seen his skills before. He rocks a party! But still, I'm in my head like, "I never heard of a Dj opening up a hip hop show before. So my wife and I set out that evening for the show. We're at the place now, Johnny Brenda's, cool spot. The lights dim, the music starts going and there's Sonny,doing his thing. DUDE! I'm jammin', looking around...so is everyone else. He's playing it all, having the whole house rockin'. To give you a vivid picture of what it was like, he was a puppeteer in control of a crowd of marionettes. We did as he commanded, he didn't have to say a single word to invoke crowd participation. My point is this, as an artist, his work is elegant in it's structure. He never leaves you wanting in with his music, his ear is impeccable. Simply Classic is just one more mix to add to the mixtape collection. In this mix, he has seamlessly blended together, the sounds of M.I.A., Tupac, Aaliyah, Mos Def and Busta to name a few. As an added bonus, Simply Classic is hosted by Hezekiah, a phenomenal beat maker and lyricist. Take a listen and understand why Simply Classic is just that!

FREEK OF THE WEEK: NOTORIOUS MOFO

This weeks freek is none other than the Notorious B.I.G(r.i.p.), who most would consider one of the greatest rappers of all time. Hey...look folks, there is no rhyme or reason as to why I choose the folk that I choose. Honestly, I had to do B.I.G., plain and simple!

FREEK OF THE WEEK: 808'S, HEARTBREAK AND UGLINESS

One of my newest freeks. Yeezy has become a target due to his constant image reformation. I respect his style and talent, which garnished him the title "FREEK OF THE WEEK." His album 808's and Heartbreak has gotten mixed reviews from my peers but it is one of his albums that I do like. Along with his first album College Dropout, I think 808's and heartbreak is a humble album. Though it's a different kind of humble than the first, more on the lines of I'm on top and I'm making moves, but it's more to this life than fame and fortune. Kanye has come back to earth to dwell with the rest of us. good for him. In no way am I a self-proclaimed music critic, but like everyone, I have my favorites.

Just like I said, I almost had it. Good ol' Karmaloop and The Cool Kids hosted a t-shirt contest on their site. The decision day was set for around the 31st of January, and the deadline for submissions was on the first. When I first saw the contest I toiled...should I, shouldn't I. Funny enough, I really don't do the contest thing, but I was for whatever reason, compelled to enter this one. So I got my images together and began my work. I finally finished the design and was proud and happy that I entered. It came time to save my work, upload my image and submit my entry. Once that was done, I was calling everyone, "hey so and so, I entered a t-shirt design in this contest on karmaloop and I want you to vote for it." Man, I checked that site through and through looking for my entry and couldn't find the damn thing, it wasn't there. I said to myself, "let me check the guide lines to see if I followed all the directions to the letter," and there I saw it in light grey letters: deadlines for all submissions are due January 1st. Of course it wouldn't be so bad if it was like December 29th, but since it was January 29th, I was, as the French say, "sh*t outta luck." So here it is people, my entry. WTF?!

So check it out. As you may or may not know, I freek out faces. What this means is I take someone and recreated their likeness in my style, a characiture if you may. You like that don't you...if you may. But anyways, what I did here is freek out B.I.G., this is in tribute to the man and the movie (which I heard very mixed reviews about), as well as an addition to Freekugly's Spring/Summer collection.
